Smith serves as the weekday co-anchor of 7 Action News This Morning from 4:30 a.m. – 7:00 a.m. She has also managed to win several ever since she started her journalism career including an Emmy award in 2019 and 2010 for Best On-Air Talent from the Michigan Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. She made a special report in March 2007 about a program that was helping victims of human trafficking. Due to this report, she won an Emmy Award for enclosing societal concerns.
Smith previously worked for WWMT in Kalamazoo/Grand Rapids where she served as an anchor as well as a reporter. While there, she reported and produced 11 stories which she delivered live from Ground Zero in New York City. It was here that she won her first Emmy award for reporting at WWMT after making a special report of two missing West Michigan children’s cold cases. Furthermore, her three-part special report entitled “Facing Racism: A Daily Battle” won a Michigan Association of Broadcasters Merit Award for Community Involvement.
Prior to her time at WWMT, she worked for WTVM in Columbus, Georgia where she served as an anchor as well reporter. Prior to her tenure at WTVM, she worked for WBSG in Brunswick, Georgia where she served as an anchor/reporter. She had also spent several years working for CNN in Washington, D.C. where she was an intern. She went to the University of Georgia where she graduated and studied at UGA’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
When it comes to serving her community, Smith is so very active. For instance, she has been making donations and volunteering in several foundations and organizations including Make-A-Wish Michigan, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), the Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division, and Michigan Humane. Furthermore, she has made donations to Grant Me Hope, the Michigan Adoption Resource Exchange, the Sky Foundation, and the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy’s early literacy program Reading and Rhythm on the Riverfront.
